Oh the gluttony
29 November 2004 09:46Still recovering from the weekend.
Thursday had a wonderful Thanksgiving dinner with
liakela,
zammis,
kalkail,
kolyada,
sharrainchains,
histoire68, Reba, George, and Charlie, and Sam's friends from work, Rosa and Jorge.
liakela once again proved her master chef skills. Thanks to everyone that brought stuff. The food and drink was yummy and plentiful (mmmm, sangria). Afterwords
chrisv and
nachoha joined us for games and there was much gaming goodness including Apples to Apples, Puerto Rico, Medici, Nanofictionary, Munchkin, and Pirate's Cove. Also broke out the crayons to draw "children's" pictures to send off to our friends in Iraq c/o Reba :-)
zammis,
kalkail,
kolyada, and
chrisv were with us for most of the weekend.
histoire68 stayed for Friday. Friday we went to Isabella's for a 2nd round of food orgy. The rest of the weekend was spent sleeping and eating and gaming. Special thanks to
kalkail for indulging my Game of Thrones obsession.
Sunday was my birthday and
wylddelirium was able to join us. I got pizza and cheesecake and more sangria and more gaming time. Life is good. Sam even got me a reserve cheesecake for when I finish the first one - now that is love :-)
Delayed birthday greetings to
webqatch.
Hope everyone else had a good Thanksgiving.

We just had a couple touch down a few miles west for us - headed NW. Another has touched down to the east and is headed our way.
zammis saw one from her place that touched down near Route 28, she's fine, though is without power for the moment.
Edit: We're fine, though my Internet connection got knocked out for a day. Saw some tornado damage near the Brunswick highway exit. Meanwhile had a lovely time at Faire this weekend.

23 July 2004 11:461. Which era were you supposed to have been born into, and why?
I think I was just about 20 years too late, would've made such a good flower child.
2. You've finally been apprehended after your year-long nun-killing spree - what is your last meal on death row, and what song do you have playing through your headphones as the switch is flicked?
Last meal: Pizza
Last song: Happy Phantom by Tori
( More silly questions )

23 July 2004 11:331. Do you follow current events? Why/Why not?
Yes, because I'm curious and I like to know what's going on around me.
2. Where do you get most of your news from?
Salon.com - by far my favorite news site, is definitely my primary source - that and my network of friends. Occasionally supplemented by Guardian, Washington Post, Wonkette, Techdirt, AP feeds (for science news) and Utne magazine.
3. Do you believe that the media is biased? Why or why not?
Of course it is, everything has a bias.
4. Will you be voting this year?
Yes, will probably be an election judge as well.
5. Describe one political issue that really pushes your button.
Trashing the environment for short-term economic gains. I think if we make our planet unlivable for future generations, most other political issues really don't matter all that much. Ok, the gay marriage bullshit bugs me too.

It is mine
26 June 2004 12:27At long last - I have a new car!
I ended up getting a Mazda 3. My frugal side won out - I could get the Mazda for about $5,000 less than most of it's competitors, so there you go. It's cute, I like it - hopefully will get a chance to test it out a bit this weekend.
For the rest of you this means I'll be able to be more social, so Yay.

Job quiz from
snarkymarcy:
1. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?
A cartographer.
2. When you were 18, what did you think you were going to do with your life (career/college major.)
Become a cartographer :-)
3. It's hard to know what to do with your life when you're 18...is it at all similar to what you do now?
Yes *grin* Ok, so I was focused.
4. What was your favorite/most interested past job you had that is unrelated to what you are doing now?
Favorite was working retail at game stores.
Most interesting was probably my brief stint as a Christian Minister.
5. Guidance Counselor Marcy here...Money is not an object (you won enough lottery to now worry about how to pay the bills, and you are bored/it's the Star Trek universe where we have evolved past money.) What job would you do to fill your time?
The same thing as I'm doing now, GIS, though more field work would be fun. Would also switch to part-time to leave more time for travelling.

New car shopping
1 June 2004 16:07My somewhat contradictory criteria:
Size should be a small sedan (as small as possible while still holding 4 people comfortably and have enough storage that I can use it for camping trips).
It should be as environmentally friendly as possible – I won’t consider anything getting less than 35 mpg on the highway.
It should be fun to drive, both in the city, and during long-distance road trips.
It should be reasonably priced – limit is approx. $25,000, obviously the cheaper the better. I get a significant discount on Fords and other Ford owned brands.
It should be reliable – the main reason I’m looking at new vs. old.
The leading contenders so far:
Toyota Prius the obvious choice on environmental factors, though it’s near the upper end of my price range. Probably would win on reliability too. Unfortunately it’s not available until the fall and I’m not sure I want to wait that long.
Ford Focus and Mazda 3, either of which could be had for about ½ the price of a Prius and would be available immediately. Focus also has super-low emissions.
VW Jetta, included because I want to compare a diesel – mpg are almost as good as the Prius and it could be converted to run on vegetable oil, which would just be cool.
I chose these cars based on reviews from http://www.edmunds.com/ and http://www.autoweb.com/ - all rave reviews from both sites. I plan to go out for test drives in all of these in the next couple of weeks. Driving will probably be the deciding factor. I’m not going to buy something I don’t like driving.
So comments from the peanut gallery? Any opinions on these cars? Any other cars I’m really missing out on that I should be including in here?
One of the obvious contenders, the Honda Civic, is not included because I already know what it’s like to drive it and I’d like something better (or at least the same, in which case the Ford or Mazda would win on price).

autumncat caught a picture of me and Zammis from the 2001 Day of Wrong. The rest of the pictures are worth seeing too. Day of Wrong pics start on page 10.

bring on the chaos
7 May 2004 12:27Cool quote found by
mossneko:
When the Tao is lost, there is goodness.
When goodness is lost, there is morality.
When morality is lost, there is ritual.
Ritual is the husk of true faith,
the beginning of chaos.
-Lao Tzu (as translated by Stephen Mitchell)
Discussion and alternate translations.
