Date: 25 Feb 2005 02:29 (UTC)Maybe it's just 'cause we were girl scouts... ;)
I was the only one actually trying to light the fire because I was also the only person who had declared on that bright and sunny midafternoon that it was going to rain that night (the clover were closing up at 2pm). Therefore I was also the only person on the overnight hike with a raincoat, and everyone else was hiding in the shelter.
Of course, it wasn't POURING... just raining.
And to think, people were laughing at me that afternoon because I told them it was going to rain... ;) "Cyd, there is not a cloud in the sky, and you haven't heard a weather report since we got here, there is no way it's going to rain, and no way you'd know..."
Okay, I was a weather freak as a kid. I could forecast at least the sun/rain thing days in advance... although I couldn't tell you how much. *smirk*

Date: 1 Mar 2005 04:52 (UTC)And yeah... those boys who play with flammable liquids are cheaters!
I've actually had better luck getting a fire to start on a rainy day than on at least one sunny afternoon. *g* Helps that on that rainy day I lucked out and found at least enough wood to *start* the silly thing that was actually dry... and enough old stuff that would dry out and catch before the dry stuff was gone. That and a couple of friends willing to hold a poncho in the right spot helps a lot as well :-)
(hey, you do what you have to to get warm stuff into you before attempting to dry out and sleep)

Date: 25 Feb 2005 02:34 (UTC)Barring that, the liquid propellant idea isn't a bad one. :) However, if you absolutely have to, you can take bug spray and spray down one of the branches, then light. DO NOT SPRAY AFTER LIT, or you'll explode the can as the flame climbs the spray. But spray down a branch, light it on fire, and it'll hold long enough to dry some of the wood around it and light on fire.
Yeah, I was a scout. *smirk* I had over fifty badges before I was done... I'm such a geek. ;)
