Election

The report from Brunswick - our election went very smoothly, we had an initial rush and the a fairly steady trickle though the rest of the day. Very rarely did we have any line, but our total turnout was an impressive 67%. (average voter turnout). Even in our news-blackout seclusion we could tell the difference - we had an amazing number of first time voters, people excited to be there. When the day was done I checked and Obama did indeed win our Republican-majority precinct. When I finally got home I was treated to the news that he has won.

It's hard to express how I feel - in the past few weeks I've tried to keep myself from getting my hopes up. I'm amazed, my faith in America has been renewed - and a huge sigh of relief that we will be free of government by fundamentalists.

During the election one of my coworkers was asking some of our older voters if they remembered the first president they voted for...one remembered Calvin Coolidge...and now watching Obama give his victory speech I'm struck by how far our country has come.

I think that I really knew that it would happen when I saw John McCain on SNL last weekend. That was not a man who thought that he still had a prayer for winning today.

But yeah... this is the first time since 1988 that I have voted for a major party presidential candidate. I've never felt so good about election day in my life.

Glad to hear you helped out with the election! I did a little myself at the GMU campus, but you probably contributed way more than me and for that I salute you! ;)

I couldn't even begin to describe how I feel....only that it's like finally waking up from an 8-year-old nightmare! :D

Remebered Calvin Coolidge as a former president (died 1933), remembered when Coolidge *was* President (mid-1923 to March 1929), or remembered actually *voting* for him (which would have to have been in 1924 at the latest)? I find it a bit difficult to believe the latter applies to a co-worker... anyone who voted in the 1924 election would be over 100 years old by now.

Going by his say-so, it is possible, we certainly have voters over 100, though I didn't actually check that guys age.
