Back home from TCEP. Much fun was had, many games were played. It was nice to share one of my favorite events with [livejournal.com profile] auror and [livejournal.com profile] radiant_one. Also good to see a lot of faces I don't get to see very often.

Not very many new games for me this time - probably the only one of note was Die Macher. Die Macher is a game of German politics which has a somewhat infamous reputation in gaming circles as being a monster game - after playing it I'm not really sure why. It's certainly longer than most Eurogames, but it's nothing compared to some older American games like Civilization or Titan. Anyway I enjoyed it despite being crushed ([livejournal.com profile] blackpaladin won, with [livejournal.com profile] auror getting a close 2nd) and would play again, I probably won't buy it though - if I'm going to play a long game there are a lot of others I'd prefer more.

Other games played include Anno 1503, Apples to Apples, Drunter & Druber, Kahuna, Louis XIV, Pandemic, Qwirkle, Ra, Race for the Galaxy, Red Dragon Inn, St. Petersburg, Shear Panic, Ticket to Ride, and Transamerica.

Next weekend, probably faire.

The infection is now under the skin. Thank you for introducing me to more games and for sharing the weekend. And big thanks for helping me with my migraine.... *snuggles*

I think a lot of Die Macher's reputation is due to the fact that all of the learning curve seems to be front-loaded: you really have to go through that entire "tutorial video" (or equivalent) in order to understand how everything fits together in order to have any hope of understanding the game. Once you go through that, yeah, it's pretty easy. But aside from the so-called "hardcore" gamers (like us), not many people are going to be thrilled at the concept of going through the learning process.

Probably true. I know I heard more than one comment while the video was playing to the effect of "You have to watch a video to learn how to play? No thanks..."

It's not that you have to, it's that it probably took less time to do that than to read the rules and then (most likely) get something horribly wrong.

Plus - my voice was getting shot by then.

"Have to" might be a little strong. The rules are all in the book, it just seemed like the podcast did a better job of explaining them than trying to plod through it. (Which doesn't say anything complimentary about how the rules are written, but that's another argument altogether.)

I think [livejournal.com profile] blackpaladin is correct - that he won. But I'd totally love to play it again in the future to challenge for first place :-D
