The Mysterious Flame of Queen Loana by Umberto Eco - I've been an Umberto Eco fan since Foucault's Pendulum, which is probably my favorite novel. I found this one to be his best since. It's about a bookseller who has lost all memory of his personal life, but remembers everything he's ever read. He tries to regain his memory and puzzle out what kind of person he was by going back through what he read when he was younger. This is a book written for bibliophiles *cough*[livejournal.com profile] kbuxton*cough*, the main character thinks in quotes. Like most Eco, the writing is very dense, but I think it's more accessible than some, even if the literary references do go flying overhead.

Banewreaker by Jacqueline Carey - The first book of Carey's Sundering series, this is likely to appeal to a very different audience than her Kushiel books. It is traditional fantasy in a style very similar to Tolkien, in fact it's essentially a retelling of Tolkien from the bad guys perspective. It is well done, but folks looking for more Kushiel are likely to be disappointed. This is for those people that made it through The Silmarillion. If you are looking for more Kushiel you have to wait 14 more days :-)

Next on the reading list:
The Princes of Ireland by Edward Rutherfurd
Cartomancy by Michael Stackpole
Rainbow's End by Vernor Vinge

Hmmm... Will need to look into the Carey book.

I already have Foucalt's Pendulum on my list (to purchase, then read ;^D). I read The Name of the Rose years ago and swore I'd never read any more Eco. Not because he was a BAD writer (I really liked the book, but it took FOREVER to slog through it! *g*), but because it was SOOOO dense. So many people keep recommending him, that I now need to foreswear and read him again. ;^D

Thanks for the recommendation!

Ooh! And amnesia, too! Now on my booklist. Thanks.

Saw you at Balticon yesterday but was in transit and you looked in converstion, so figured, another time. But I liked the red on black (embroidered?) outfit.

Eek, typed too fast

To clarify (I think you got what I was saying, but still): *I* was in transit, and you were in *conversation*.

Edward Rutherford! *squeals* I have all his books; it would be my most fangirl-ishly fangirl dream to see him write a historical novel about Japan.

AngelVixen :-)

*blinks* There's going to me more Kushiel? Really? I thought she said she was done with that? (which made me sad, though I did like Banewreaker, but... yeah, whole different universe, much less sex.)

I'm reading _The Queen of the South_ right now, and I think you'd like it, also all the other books by this author (whose name I am forgetting, but that's what Amazon is for).
