FSG report cont'd
21 June 2005 16:22Behind the cut are notes from the Paganism and Gaming workshop that was run by myself,
divalion, and
random221b.
Introductions, including whether we are Pagans and gamers and whether one lead to the other. Despite what Jack Chick says it seems that most of us arrived at them independently.
Using fictional sources for Gods, rituals, magical workings, aid to understanding myths and archetypes. Examples include Church of All Worlds, Klingon Wicca. Does age or a non-fiction source add inherent legitimacy? Most of us felt it did not.
Modern adaptaions of traditional deities. Examples are Gaiman's American Gods, or the image of Thor on a Harley. Is there a reason to think Deities would not change with the times?
Using real rituals or sacred items in a game context? I had this on my original outline, but we didn't end up talking about it.
Using game as ritual or as a way to explore myths/archetypes?
divalion and
random221b talked about many examples, such as a Tarot game in which players played the various arcana. Why do you pick the roles that you do? What does that say about you? Role-playing as a way of exploring different aspects of yourself.
Evolution of gaming systems from abstract (D&D) to be more "realistic" (Ars Magica, Mage).
We were also planning on including an actual role-playing element to the workshop allowing people to play out a short scenario, but realized we probably wouldn't have enough people for it to really work so didn't do it. Maybe another time.
