Once again I'll plug http://www.factcheck.org/ to anyone even vaguely interested in politics. A new article there rips apart the Moveon ad about the assault weapons ban and takes a look at both candidates records on the issue.
Although I like FactCheck.org, in this instance, their stance on this one is just a little messed up......
In the iterests of full disclosure, let me say that I used to be a spokesman for the Brady Campaign for the two years leading up to the 2000 elections. And the blog that I cite here, Demagogue, has it absolutely correct when they say that it doesn't do the facts justice solely to say that Bush has said he'd support renewal of the assault weapons ban. Bush went all over the country several times for all three sets of his tax cuts. They campaigned on them, and they campaigned against people who didn't support them.
Bush put out not one single iota of political capital -- not even a phone call -- to help renew the assault weapons ban. This is the guy whom the NRA said in 1999, "we'll work right out of his office." He hasn't changed his stripes a bit.
Presidents can do a lot of things when they want something passed. Bush hasn't done a single one of them.
I thought that Bush didn't act in support of the ban came through pretty clearly in the factcheck.org article. Though I agree the last sentence sounds a little off, putting the blame on Congress, when it really should be shared.
