So I'm going to be an election judge in tuesdays primary and went to a training session today. Thought a few of you might be interested in how the evil Diebold machines are going to be implemented, at least in Maryland.

To their credit it looks like my county is doing as much as possible to make the election secure given that the state has mandated that they use these machines. Background material at http://www.elections.state.md.us/citizens/voting_systems/.

In short - there will be a paper receipt, but it won't be voter-verified. The election judges will verify both the electronic and the paper receipt vote totals before reporting the precint results. Results will be turned in by hand and will not be transmitted electronically at any point. Neither the voting units, nor the GEMS machine will be connected to the Internet or other phone lines.

Everything on the machines will be tamper-taped during the elections and they aren' t using any of the default passwords.

Well thank god *some* people are using at least a minimum proportion of their brains, and aren't just shouting 'corporations are better than democracy! Remove our freedom!'
