Sadly the end of our trip, our last day is spent visiting the Roman Baths.

So the weather forecast is rain the whole day, we take that as an excuse to sleep in and do a nice breakfast at home. Today's destination is Bath. Due to starting late, rain, and some navigational difficulties (and trouble finding change needed to pay for parking) we don't have as much time in Bath as originally planned and pretty much just do the Roman ruins.

The ruins are quite impressive with the bath house itself mostly intact. Somewhat humbling to walk on the same pavement the Romans did. Besides the baths, there’s a small museum about the Roman-era city and the archeological finds here. I find it interesting that largely due to the Romans need to brag about themselves, we know a lot more about that period than the 500 or so years that followed. Also nicely illustrated is our tendency to build in layers, with the street level of Roman Bath about two stories below the modern city. The temple that was here was dedicated to Minerva, so we pay our respects - maybe we’ll get a little wisdom in return.

Sadly we are too late for high tea, [livejournal.com profile] radiant_one was hoping to do formal tea in the grand Victorian-era pump room above the baths. It was perhaps a blessing in disguise though as instead we end up doing dinner on the way home at The Northey, which was probably our best meal of the trip. Steak for her, lamb chops for me, and a cheese plate that was a work of art (and delicious). Sadly though our trip must come to an end. The evening is spent packing up and watching Downton Abbey.

Our final day, not much to report - glad we aren’t doing sightseeing as the rain is pouring the whole day, all we’re doing is the drive back to Heathrow. The pokiness of the car rental means we don’t have much time to enjoy the mall that is Heathrow, but we do try out the Gordon Ramsay picnics (not too shabby) and have a thankfully uneventful flight home.
