Tahoe part 2
1 July 2011 22:52The continuing saga of our adventures at Lake Tahoe.
Day 5 - Wednesday
Today is boat day, a whole bunch of us go out on the lake in a catamaran - including my totally awesome grandmother. The lake is beautiful and calm, just enough breeze to allow the boat to switch to full sail. We have our requisite boat drinks and enjoy the scenery. We have a late lunch from a Greek place near the house and then nap time before dinner. Dinner is back to being with the whole family followed by a game of Apples to Apples in which we probably are not a good influence on my younger cousins.
Day 6 - Thursday
Today it's just Zammis and I as we aim to do a drive around the lake - not that we make it that far. Start up the east side of the lake, stop for a short hike to Eagle Rock which has a lovely panoramic view of the lake (and adds to the evidence that our guide books idea of "easy" and ours are not the same) and then continue on north to Truckee. Hear we stop for lunch at a Mexican place. Not thinking much of it we order a "small" pitcher of margaritas - what we get is a standard water pitcher full of rocket fuel strength margaritas of awesomeness. Being in no condition to walk after that we browse the shops downtown for a bit before getting back in the car. Also near Truckee is the site of the infamous Donner Party's misadventures, I recommend that wiki article (which I helped with) if you've never read the details, it's a fascinating story. Anyway there is a small museum now at the site about it and more generally about the migration to California.
By the time we are done there we are quite a bit behind schedule as we're supposed to get back to the house for group photos - we forgo doing the loop and just head back the way we came. We are late, but not the latest, so all is well. We have BBQ for dinner and the massive herding cats attempt for the group photo is done. Afterwards we have our own blind wine tasting hosted by one of my cousins. By the way have I mentioned that my family are a bunch of lushes? One uncle is a vintner - him and his family brought six cases of wine, I think we go through one of those tonight - and after that more Shanghai.
Day 7 - Friday
We had grand plans to go kayaking today, but were not feeling up to it. Instead we have a mostly quiet day, spend a little time in the casino (more blackjack - still came out ahead, but not by much) and Zammis got to work her mojo on a couple of family members. Lunch is at The Brewery, dinner is our last evening with the whole family - includes Zammis' yummy goat cheese filled, bacon wrapped dates.
Day 8 - Saturday
Our last day, we say our good byes and head out, a quick stop at Cave Rock to take a last look at the lake. Then it's over to Nevada - a tasty lunch in Carson City, wave at the Bunny Ranch and go on to Virginia City. Virginia City was one of the early boom towns of the West and is now mostly tourist oriented with lots of Old West schlock. We don't have a lot of time here, but decide to go the little trolley tour which gives a nice overview of the history and also stop briefly in their Boot Hill cemetery. Then it's on back to Reno to catch our flight home. We're on a red eye and amazingly actually manage to sleep on the plane.
Day 9 - Sunday
Arrive in BWI bright and early - if only all our bags came with. File a claim for the one that's missing, fortunately it will catch up with us Monday morning so all is well. Meanwhile we head home for a final day of slack with the kitties before we have to work again.
In case you missed it pictures are located here.
