One day, the Gaffer suspected that Sam Gamgee was loafing again. He decided to sneak up on Sam so he could spy on him.
"Camouflage," thought the Gaffer, "I gots to camouflage meself." So he got himself a big wooden tub full of hot water and added a generous helping of dark brown dye. He hopped in, and rolled around in the tub until he was thoroughly coated.
When he got out, of course, he was dripping wet. He lay down beside the fire to dry off.
Unfortunately, he fell asleep. Two hours later, he awoke with a start to find that while he had managed to successfully dye himself a rich dark brown, the dry dye was so stiff that he couldn't move! He yelled for help until Sam and Frodo came. They had to soak him in the tub for another hour before he softened up.
The moral? Old hobbits dye hard.
