No more Evecons?

The Fantek folks are planning on taking a break from doing cons.
"Dear Friends,
This is a copy of the letter I have written for the next Castle. I hope that you read it and remember all the good times we've had together. Please do not be sad, there will be more good times in the future....
"This is probably going to be the hardest letter to write. Cheryl and I have decided, after much discussion, that we need to take a break from doing conventions for a while.
This may, or may not, be a permanent hiatus. We do wish to continue doing some of the less work-intensive FanTek events such as the Bad
Movie Nites. We will likely reduce or eliminate the Castle mailings and depend more on keeping the FanTek website updated with new information.
We do want all of you to know that we have appreciated your efforts over all these years. We have enjoyed meeting you and hope that you will remain our friends.
Hopefully, you have also enjoyed the conventions and will look back on them fondly. Personally I feel like I've just lost a good friend, something that I've worked on for a goodly portion of my life.
But as they say, "forever is a long time", so we won't say that we will never do another convention, just that we need some time off. We consider the cons as being in suspended animation.
Cheryl says that "they will be sleeping underneath the Antarctic ice with the Old Ones and that when the stars are right and Great Cthulhu arises, well, you never know...."
Anyway, we still have one more EveCon to go, EveCon 21, Jan. 2,3,4 at the Sheraton Reston, and it looks like it will be one of the best ever. It'd be nice to end on a high note. We have more games, new dealers, and a lot of interesting programs lined up for you.
It should be one last chance to have a good time together and a chance to say goodbye for a little while. I would like it if everyone thought about all the good times that we've had rather than being sad.
Remember, you never know what the Future will hold....
Your Friend - Bruce"

This is rather sad in a nostalgic sort of way for me. When I moved to the DC area 6 years ago Evecon was the first local gaming/fandom related event that I attended and it's where I made my first friends in the area (including
zammis,
sethcohen,
allah_sulu, and
webqatch among others). It was folks I met there that sucked me into the whole faire scene. It is where I found the players for my own gaming group. I think Evecon is the best convention in the DC/Baltimore area and it will be sorely missed.

Date: 3 Dec 2003 13:41 (UTC)Fingers crossed that he changes his mind again... though as this is the second time that he's made the decision, and there aren't all the overwhelming things that there were the first time (that he managed to deal with back then)... he probably won't.
*g* 1st Evecon I went to, I ended up pulling an unintentional all-nighter, as we couldn't find *anyone* to volunteer to relieve the two of us who got talked into manning the con suite. Fun, but... no way do I think I could do that one again :-) Haven't been to one in I think 6 years now, and the last 3 I only managed a few hours on two days.
