So part one, getting stuff from Chicago to Maryland is done. Now begins decided what to do with all this stuff I've inherited.
Games - probably the biggest item, several hundred games - most of which I don't really want as the likelihood of me ever playing them is slim. I'll probably keep a couple dozen or so and then the bulk will get sold off, but that means cataloging them and checking each to make sure each is complete. People here and on the GCOM list will get first crack at them, then I'll probably list them on BoardGameGeek, after that I'll resort to eBay. I've already bought more utility shelving to put these on, though it's probably not enough.
Books - mostly on military and Native American history and a pile of atlases, these I'll probably keep, just need another book shelf to put them on, may pick one up tomorrow.
Miniatures - I wasn't sure what to do with these, there's a box of plastic ones (Wizards D&D minis) that I really don't want but figured someone would (
chrisv has first choice, if he doesn't want them they're free to whoever does). The metal ones I don't really have a use for but couldn't bear to throw out, most of them I painted and they're in pretty good shape, many of these little guys have names as they were used in the long running D&D campaign that my Dad ran for me and my friends during high school.
Music - my dad had a lot of CDs, mostly blues - will start a low priority project of slowly digitizing it all.
Rug - one, probably valuable, oriental rug - still good, but badly in need of cleaning, already called a place and will be taking it in tomorrow. I think it'll go in the living room after we got our current rugs ripped out.
Poker table - I don't know if I'll keep this but I didn't want to throw it out, it needs resurfacing but otherwise is a really cool table. If one of you folks that hosts regular poker nights is interested you can have it (it looks like this one).
Watch - a really gorgeous steampunkish looking pocket watch that I had no idea my dad had. Need to find out if I can get it working, it has a winding key, but it looks like the key might be stripped, it any rate it certainly didn't want to wind.
Magic cards - these I didn't bring home, that would've been too much. Our tentative plan is to sell them off and use the proceeds to work on getting his unpublished games published. I need to do research to figure out the best way to go about doing that, we're talking about a collection of over 50,000 cards, potentially including the old school library card catalog that they're currently stored in. Fortunately my father was anal-retentive enough to have most of them cataloged, so we have an idea of what's there, but still I think selling it as anything other than one large lot would be too labor intensive.
Unpublished games - I found 4 of these, plus the one I already had:
Tribal Nations - this was the game he was working on when he died. I'm not sure how complete it is, we did a playtest last Christmas and it still wasn't what I'd consider playable, but it was getting there. Sharon would really like to see this one get published. My dad's intention was to target it towards the mass market/education game market rather than the hobby niche market that I'm more familiar with. Assuming the mechanics are done it will still need a lot of polish in terms of the components. The bulk of the game is large deck of cards with a card for each tribe, ideally those would all have flavor text and artwork on them. It also needs a new map, the one we made and were using for the playtest really wasn't working - too many tribes, it's way too hard to find where they are.
Tin Lizzies - I think this one is essentially complete and I think is the best of his, just need to check and make sure all the parts are there. It does need more playtesting, and could probably use some simplification, I recall it being just a little too fiddly than most people would be willing to deal with.
unnamed railroad game - this one may be missing a key component - written down rules. Will have to see if I can remember them, it's been a really long time since I've played it.
Rails from the Darkside - not publishable due to copyright restrictions but is complete, is a very silly variant of the Mayfair crayon railroad games, I could potentially make a web version and post it as a freebie.
Inside Trader - stock market card game I already had and have started playtesting. I need to incorporate the playtest comments I've already gotten and make a version 2.
Trafalgar - was the one I was looking for and didn't find, I'm not sure if the rules had ever been written down though in any case.
D&D - I did find my dad's dungeon, I don't know if I'd ever be able to interpret his notes well enough to run it, but I brought it home in case I ever get inspired enough to make the attempt.
