So literally the first thing I see when I get home and fire up the computer was that Gary Gygax had passed away. For those that don't know Gygax is largely responsible for the existence of the role-playing game industry and by extension it's various spin-offs. It's hard to imagine what my life would have been like without him. My father introduced me to D&D, he GMed a campaign for me and my friends that ran throughout my high school years. The only book we had was this one, everything else he had written down and he kept the mechanics mostly to himself. Our characters went from peons to demi-Gods. I also had the basic set (with the crayons) that I used to run a few of my own games (yes we went through Keep on the Borderlands). The other players in my Dad's game formed the core of my friends and I'm still in touch with most of them, for that matter most of my friends I've met through gaming - I'm not sure how people that don't game meet new people *grin* (ok, they go to faire, but considering it was gamers that introduced me to faire . . .). RIP Gary, thank you for giving me a wonderful hobby.
