Scotland - Day 8

Proves to be a short day as I think our lack of sleep finally catches up with us. We sleep in this morning. Then off to wander the Royal Mile and do some shopping. I get lost in a map store for a couple of hours, go figure. While I'm doing that zammis goes to book a ghost tour for this evening. We go check out the Museum of Scotland which has much cool stuff - there is too much though, we only do a few levels (covering the earlier half of Scottish history). We also stop in a few shops along Victoria St., notably a cheese shop (there should be more cheesemongers in the world) and a bottle it yourself liqueur shop. Then it's back to the apartment for a nap.

The evening we go back out for our ghost tour, of which Edinburgh has many, we went with Mercat Tours which does more of the ghost stories and history and less of the jumping out and trying to scare you. Many appropriately ghoulish stories are told and we get to go into the vaults beneath the city which are appropriately creepy - zammis even got a rather nice shot of an orb. The tour ended with this lovely story. With that, it's time for bed.

They had one in Australia too - where we also spent too much money (in fact I think that one had a better selection), so I'd imagine you might find them anywhere that is a) trendy and/or touristy and b) doesn't have asinine laws about alcohol (which sadly rules the U.S. out).

NMS: Isn't it astounding? I've been to some comprehensive museums in my day, but few of them are a patch on the NMS. The prehistory-to-Romans bit almost had me beat; I skipped a floor or two and confess I more or less skimmed everything after the 18th century. Of course, I hope to see it all...some day.

Yeah, I would've liked the time to do all of it - though some of it, going to the museum at the end of our trip we felt we'd already seen a lot the same stuff in its native habitat as it were. Might've been better to do at the beginning.

Much as zammis was going on about the ghost tour (and showing off the photo!) I'm wishing I was there for that one, though I did enjoy the tour I got.
