I'm a little behind on regular what have I been up to updates, so ...
Last Thursday - scotch tasting from the Highland Park distillery - all I can say is Yum!
Friday was the first game of the Game of Thrones LARP and it was most excellent. Good people, good role-playing, fabulous costumes. Normally I'm not all that into LARP because a) I'm not all that into role-playing in general and b) usually they don't keep my interest. I think this one will, I made myself a character that should have enough to do to keep him busy (based very loosely on the Salladhar Saan character for those that know the books), plus there is a nifty board game component that will definitely help in the keeping my interest dept. - it's like a diplomacy game with a really, really long negotiation phase. For anyone that still wants to get in on it, the storytellers can be found at http://groups-beta.google.com/group/AGOT/.
Saturday was even more gaming with Brunswick-GCOM, we played Guillotine, Rum & Pirates, and In the Shadow of the Emperor. Rum & Pirates is new, and seriously, how do you expect me to pass up a game called Rum & Pirates? It's mostly a dicefest with you moving around collecting various types of victory point chips, many of which are silly, not a whole lot of depth to it, but it does allow a little strategy to keep it interesting. In the Shadow of the Emperor is a significantly more crunchy game that takes a while to figure out - it's one of those games where there is lots going on and lots of choices and you have very limited resources. I think this was my third playing of it and I think the key is to focus on the victory points - with all that's going on it's easy to lose track of the actual goal.
Sunday I made it out to the last day of faire. Dressed up a little fancier than usual including my new tights*. Weather was perfect (at least my version of perfect, cool and blustery). We got there a bit late and spent most of the day either at the White Hart or O'Shucks. Thanks to
kaliopi I had a prime seat for pubsing, which was beautiful. I didn't realize until afterwords that it's to be Tim Shaw (Jack Rackham)'s last - hard to imagine a pubsing without him.
Overall it was a lovely faire season for me. I seemed to do a lot less socializing than in the past, in part because you all seemed to be harder to find than usual with the crowds. That meant I did more sitting and people watching and listening to music - in some ways it fealt like I got to know the faire a little better for it. Hope to see you all next year. And some of you I'll see on the Pyrates cruise or the Pirate Feast! Yay for Pirates!
* was hoping to have a new codpiece to go along with them, but the one
zammis ordered for me is now nearly a year late - after this we can't in good conscience recommend ordering custom stuff from Brute Force Leather.
