The Military Detainee bill has passed Congress and many of you have already written about it - Democrats are still searching for their spine to no avail. I can take some consolation that the entire Maryland delegation voted against it and hold out a feeble hope that the Supreme Court may still strike it down - they've been slightly less blasé about shredding constitutional rights than Congress has of late.

To be fair

Every Dem in the Senate voted against the bill except for one idiot. They also spoke out against it eloquently at many turns. But I agree that they didn't fight nearly as hard as they could've.

Or at least filibuster. If Strom Thurmond could filibuster for 24 hours against the Civil Rights Act of 1957, couldn't just one or two of our Democratic senators filibuster for 12 hours each against a bill that sets its face solidly against human rights?

Apparently not. This is a day of shame for the United States of America.

I count 12 Dems in the Senate that voted for the bill.

Tom Carper (Del.)
Tim Johnson (S.D.)
Mary Landrieu (La.)
Frank Lautenberg (N.J.)
Joe Lieberman (Conn.)
Bob Menendez (N.J)
Bill Nelson (Fla.)
Ben Nelson (Neb.)
Pryor (Ark.)
Jay Rockefeller (W. Va.)
Ken Salazar (Co.)
Debbie Stabenow (Mich.)

Well, forget my illusions, then. That's what I get for not checking THOMAS first.

You mean to say that Joe "I'm not really a puppet for the White House; Dick Cheney is just checking me for polyps" Lieberman voted the Dubya line on this one? Color me shocked...

Can somebody explain to me why he doesn't just come out of the closet as a Republican?
