As long as they aren't a required part of the continuity; i.e., that parts of the movie won't make sense unless you've read the comic.
One anime series I love is Martian Successor Nadesico. A couple of years later, they finally translated and released the movie in the US. Apart from the fact that the movie was bad on its own, it didn't make any sense if you hadn't played the MSN video game, which happens after the series and has all sorts of major incidents and changes occurring. The movie takes place after that, and reflects the events of the game - the game which has never (legally, at least) been translated into English and released to the US.
I love non-canon things that fill in backstory or show other sides of the characters; but in general, they shouldn't be required reading. Imagine if you had to read every single Trek or Star Wars novel to follow the story?
