Not exactly a household name, but Karen Fonstad is one of my idols and last month she died from breast cancer at the age of 59.
She's only person ever to make a career out of mapping the worlds of science-fiction and fantasy. By applying real geographic principles to her subjects she gave the worlds added layers of depth and interest. The maps themselves are beautiful and created the standard for anyone doing fantasy cartography. I hope one day to make an atlas as awesome as hers are.
I hope her journey to the Undying Lands was a peaceful one.
