So at work we make lots of maps of the U.S. by county. The other day I was downloading some Census data and noticed there were 5 counties listed for Hawaii. Hmmmm, our maps only have 4 counties in Hawaii. I pull out the trusty Rand McNally road atlas, yep, they only show 4 counties in Hawaii as well. What is this mystery 5th county? I turn to Google and find it, the smallest county in the U.S. at only 13 square miles - Kalawao. Some links:

and http://www.fact-index.com/k/ka/kalawao_county__hawaii.html for more stats.

You should know better than to believe this propaganda. It's obvious that Kalawao county doesn't exist.

Wow

"According to the United States Census Bureau, New York County (the Borough of Manhattan) has a total area of 87.5 km² (33.8 mi²). 59.5 km² (23.0 mi²) of it is land and 28.0 km² (10.8 mi²) of it is water. The total area is 32.01% water."

I wonder when this county was formed. Always thought that the smallest was Manhattan. Guess not ;)
