I did that just so that I could use the full name of the community for the link, didn't even think of changing the little icon, mmm, fun with icons. :-)
Sure - I usually update through LJ itself as I do most of my updating from work (which doesn't let me install anything), but could use it while home - liakela would probably like it too.
I also update through LJ itself. I just use this tool to generate the HTML for me, which I copy and paste into my journal. (There's a good example here.) I still need to write documentation for it; for the most part, it's fairly obvious how to use it, but there are a few little details that could use clarification.
There are two files, an executable and an INI file (which contains the URLs of all the GIFs employed, with plenty of room for more). The latter gets updated frequently.
