I've read elsewhere that the number of troops killed is probably quite a bit higher since the official counts don't include those that die from injuries after they've been flown back to the States.

I believe it also doesn't include the contractor deaths.

Another important story is the wounded. Many of the wounded today would have been dead of similar injuries in earlier wars. We've got people with very severe disabilities coming out of this - brain trauma, loss of limbs, paralysis, constant pain, PTSD, etc.

There was a long article in the NYTimes a month or so (magazine?) ago about this.

Those numbers were in the couple thousands.
