The journey continues under the cut.

Day 2

After the long day yesterday we sleep in a bit and decide to take a slow day, still being somewhat jet lagged. We go over to Plymouth which is the nearest big city to where we’re staying and meander a bit around the old harbourfront. On the way there I will note that we saw a chicken crossing the road. Not a little road either, this was a 4 lane highway, the chicken was most of the way across lane 2 when I spotted it - clearly a chicken with places to go. Sadly we couldn’t stop to ask it why. Anyway, lunch is at a seafood and pasta place on the water - ok food, and we really don’t mind the live Irish music coming out of the bar next door. There is a neat little monument marking the departure of the Mayflower. We walked around the Royal Citadel and then head back to the cottage. On the way we stop at a lovely pub in St. Mellion for dinner and drinks. The first cider of the trip is consumed! These things are important. Back home we enjoy the season premiere of Downton Abbey - we are such geeks.

Day 3 - Michele's day 3 pictures

In the morning I run out to get pasties for breakfast, because that’s what you do in Cornwall, also tea. Today's target is Tintagel of Arthurian legend. We find the town with only a few wrong turns. First attempt at walking to the castle puts us dangerously close to the Scientology stronghold of Camelot Castle - which does have lovely views of Tintagel. Soon we’re on the right track - a bit of a hike to get to the visitor center and the ruins themselves. The interpretative materials were a little weak (the wikipedia page is more detailed), but the ruins of the medieval era castle are impressive, mostly due to the cliff-top setting. We don’t stay as long as we might have as it’s starting to rain and the hiking is not easy, there’s quite a bit of climbing. On the way back the visitor center redeems itself by having a mead and cider tasting. Mmmm, mead and cider. Back in the village we have tea and pasties for lunch (seems familiar).

We meant to stock up on groceries yesterday, but ran out of time before the stores closed. So we take care of that now, going over to Launceston. While looking for the grocery we run into a castle, coincidentally made by the same guy that made Tintagel - a busy man apparently. We do find the grocery and thus are able to have dinner in of tasty fishies. Also acquired a nice selection of Cornish cheeses. Mmmmm, cheese. Included is the nominee for best cheese name, which is quite tasty, but I think my favorite was the Cornish Blue, OMG was it yummy.

Oh you forgot the overheard comment on the climb/haul your ass up a mountain/hike...

A woman speaking to the group at large in a rather exasperated tone, "I'm from Suffolk. It's flat there."

I would recall this line several times as we went mountain climbing quite often during this vacation.
