And we're back - pictures are now up at http://pics.livejournal.com/kmusser/gallery/00049910
zammis and I arrived in San Diego last Friday, we took a moment to enjoy the non blazing hot weather than then hopped a bus to our hotel downtown. The hotel is a bit fancier than expected, though the lack of free Internets is sad. We have lunch at the Yardhouse with their impresssive number of draft beers. Then off to Coronado for some sightseeing. We take the ferry over and get some lovely views from the bay looking back towards downtown and at the ships in the harbor, including two aircraft carriers. In Coronado we walk across the island to visit the lovely Hotel del Coronado and have a sit on the beach. We have yummy Thai food and then back to the hotel.
Saturday we do the tourist trolley to get a little taste of different parts of San Diego. We get out at Old Town and wandered about a bit, including a stop at the Whaley House to look for ghosties. Afterwords we head to the Maritime Museum, mostly to look at tall ships. We spend most of our time on the Star of India. The neighboring HMS Surprise (the ship used in the film Master and Commander was closed off for a private party). The museum also had a very nice collection of historic maps of the exploration of the west coast which I enjoyed. We have a late dinner at the House of Blues, located conveniently next door to the hotel.
Sunday is zoo day! We have a lovely time, the zoo is too large to see everything, but highlights we do get to see include the pandas, Galapagos tortoises, otters, polar bears, and the aviaries. A bus tour gives us glimpses of lots of other critters as well. Also catch the sea lion show, which unexpectedly includes a timberwolf and parrots flying overhead. Dinner is at a most excellent Irish pub in the Gaslamp Quarter where we discover a new single malt to add to our favorites.
