Time for another books update

Red Mars, Green Mars, Blue Mars by Kim Stanley Robinson - The epic about the colonization of Mars, this was a re-read, still good, but I didn't really get much out of the 2nd reading.

Martians by Kim Stanley Robinson - the reason I re-read those is so this would make sense. A collection of short stories set in the same universe as the Mars trilogy - except that most of them aren't really short stories, they read more like chapter fragments that got left out of the original books, like an appendix maybe. I wouldn't really recommend it unless you're a huge fan of the trilogy.

Rendezvous with Rama by Arthur C. Clarke - one of those books I probably should've read long ago. An interesting hard SF story about the investigation of an alien object passing close to Earth. The set up is very similar to Greg Bear's Eon but I think this is a much better book. Surprising not all that dated for its age.

Sailing to Sarantium, Lord of Emperors by Guy Gavriel Kay - Continuing on my Guy Gavriel Kay kick. These are historical fiction set during the height of Byzantium, using the same alternate universe as his other historical novels. I found these fascinating, mostly told from the perspective of a mosaicist, Kay does an excellent job of bringing the historical setting to life, especially for an era that I don't know all that much about.

The Last Light of the Sun by Guy Gavriel Kay - Another amazing historical novel from Kay, this time in an era dear to my heart, that of the Vikings. The setting is almost the same as what we used for our In The Dark Times LARP. I found knowing the setting helped appreciate the book even more.

Empire of Ivory by Naomi Novik - a continuation of the Temeraire books, more fun, fleshes out the world a bit more.

1632 by Eric Flint - ok, friends have been bugging me to read this for awhile. Fun alternate history about a modern West Virginia town getting transported to the middle of Germany, radically different than other books dealing with time travel which usually have people trying not to change the past - here the West Virginians promptly start carving out a new United States 144 years early. I'll seek out the rest of the series soon.

Little (Grrl) Lost by Charles de Lint - This is really a kids (young adult?) book about a young girl who makes friends with a fairy and the adventures they have in each others worlds. More "cute" than most of de Lint's books.

My Soul to Keep by Tananarive Due - This is an excellent book, it deals with Immortals that are a sort of cross between vampires and the immortals of Highlander, one of them falls in love with a mortal and of course things don't go well. Very well written, promptly added the sequel to my wishlist.
