Scotland - Day 7

kmusserSadly this will be our last day with our camper van so we take some time in the morning to re-pack, clean, and in general prepare it for returning. Then we're off to Stirling Castle, seat of the royal House of Stuart, which is suitably impressive. Much of the castle is in the middle of a vast restoration effort to return the castle to the state it was during the days of king James V after having been used as an army barracks since the 1600's. The great hall and one of the chapels are done and look fabulous, complete with musicians loft and re-created tapestries. The rest of the palace is still being worked on, but is open, with interesting exhibits on the archaeological work being done.
After Stirling we do a short stop at Doune Castle of Monty Python fame for photos, but don't go inside as we need to get back to Glasgow. So it's back to Glasgow we go to return the van - we almost get lost due to rotaries sending us off in unexpected directions, but manage to make it and the Kira rentals folks are very nice and we chat for a bit about where we went. Then it's taxi to the train and train to Edinburgh.
Upon arriving in Edinburgh we hike to our B&B with our bags (which now contain way too much scotch, booze is heavy) only to find that they've overbooked us. Fortunately they've already found us alternative accommodation - a flat on the Royal Mile - for the same price - and they'll even drive us over there - ok, I think we can live with that. The flat is very nice being in a newish building on one of the closes near the downhill end of the Mile. Also there is a pub within stumbling distance where we participate in the fine British tradition of the pub quiz and then it's off to bed, mmmmmm, real beds, and showers we don't have to go outside to get to.
