They already make sure that their managers are all generally younger and healthier by requring managers to be able to sling heavy bags of dog food.

I've read the entire memo.

Some of the things they speak of are just a good idea from a corporate standpoint -- such as their 401(k) changes...

Currently they have a 4% 'automatic' deposit if you're eligable (I've never heard of this being an option!)
They intend to switch to a 3% corporate match, which encourages the employee to save for their own future.

But wait! That's a 1% reduction in their benefit. Yes, true. But the employee now gets 6% of their salary in their account instead of 4%, is encouraged to put SOMETHING away (versus it being done for them) and who knows, they might actually sock even MORE away than the match points.

Personally, I'd rather see Walmart stick with 4%, but make it 1/2% match for first 8% in order to encourage the workers to really explore the 401(k).

That said, some of the other points in that memo are pretty much despicable. They're constantly worried about their image and public perception and have the audacity to imply that workers should consider taking 'paid time off' in lieu of life insurance or medical benefits.

Anyway -- as always, this is a question of viewpoint and packaging.

I worked at Sam's club a few years ago... you will never believe this! they have daily "associate meetings" which means a daily session to tell you how badly they are doing ( even though the store is always crowded) not only do their employees believe them, the managers also ask the employees to work for free! because the are "over" budget and some of those people were so job scared they actually did it!.. the manager asked me to punch out then help unload 6 trucks that will be coming in I told him I punch out I go home I said it loud enough for others to hear me, the next day those same people that stayed off the clock to work were laughing when I came in . They thought I was going to get fired. later on one of them asked me why didn't you get fired, I told him they can't fire you for not wanting to work off the clock. I also told him that anyone who works for any company off the clock is a fucking moron, he didnt like that( I guess it had something to do with the fact that he stayed working off the clock for 7 more hours lol ... One time I went into the managers office and I overheard him say "profits are up 35% but we will tell everyone that they are down by25% so that we can get more people to work unpaid time" then he looked out his door and saw me, I just laughed.. I was fired about a month later lol but that was my doing... I think I showed up no more that 10 days the whole month lol
