More updates from last weekend:

Movies:
Saw Napoleon Dynamite with danamorrigan. This is an odd movie, even by my rather generous standards. Not sure what to say about it other than it left me with a WTF feeling. The Discordians among you will probably enjoy it.

Finally saw Fahrenheit 9/11. I found it excellent - will try to sort out my feelings about it in a separate post - it definitely stirred up the emotions.

Music:
mossneko joined me seeing Carbon Leaf at the 9:30 Club. Concert was quite enjoyable, though very late. Sorry we missed out on dancing.

Food:
wylddelirium took me out Tuesday to eat at Bilbo Baggins. I've been wanting to eat there ever since I found out there was such a place, but hadn't gotten around to it, it's not very conveniently located for me. The food was truly excellent - probably the best I've had in the DC area (excepting maybe Minerva). Made it well worth the trek.

Thoughts on Fahrenheit 9/11:

I thought it was extremely well done. For the most part I already knew the content, so there weren't too many surprises. Nonetheless it was still very moving. Moore's basic argument is that BushCo used 9/11 as an excuse to push through his own agenda while doing nothing about terrorism. Something I've believed for awhile, but hadn't seen presented in such a concise and powerful manner. Moore did not go off on the many tangents that he could have, and while in a few places he was a little over the top, overall I found the tone very respectful, if not downright patriotic. Bush is not portrayed as evil, but rather as someone that's in over their head and beholden to too many different interests.

Single most powerful moment in the film is the portrayal of 9/11 itself. The screen fades to black and we are left with just the sounds of that day. For me the memories came rushing back and I felt I was re-living it.

I work less than a mile from the White House and the Capitol Bldg., about 2 miles from the Pentagon. I remember the fear of that day, the feeling of being under attack, not knowing what will be hit next. I could see the smoke coming from across the river. I could hear sirens from all directions. Rumors abounded about what buildings had been attacked, that the Mall was on fire, that the Metro was shut down – most turned out to be false, but on that day I didn’t know what to believe. I ended up walking about ½ way home, because I didn’t trust being on the Metro, and then took a bus the rest of the way.

Anyway, many thanks to Mr. Moore for trying to help people see how our country has been hijacked. I hope it does some good.
