FSG report - Freeze
21 June 2005 19:31Special thanks to
wylddelirium,
ninjaslug,
mohnkern, and zenlizard for helping to make it happen.
So this came out of the idea of "who the hell wants to go to a sweat lodge in the middle of summer? We should have a freeze lodge?"
And so we did.
zenlizard and I built the physical structure, a chamber made of PVC pipe with a mesh ceiling. We added blankets on the sides as walls. On top of the mesh were added sheets and then several bags of ice that dripped though as they melted. Inside we had dry ice for added coolness.
For the ritual itself we were "smudged" with a mist of cold water. We then held a blót to Skadi, the Norse Goddess of winter and toasted her with mead that had been frozen solid. We recounted tales of ice and snow, listened to music and passed around chunks of ice and dry ice.
It worked surprisingly well - it was definitely chilly in there. The structure sagged quite a bit so I think we'll add a center support the next time we do it.
