Another FSG related post.

I'm working on a soundtrack to a certain event we are planning and need suggestions.

What are your favorite cold and/or winter themed songs?

Dido's "Christmas Day". Bar none, my favorite "winter" song.

(I don't know if songs that refrence Christmas are verboten for this particular project - it's not a 'christmas song', per se, but refrences the holiday)

It's a very, very sweet song - kinda quiet, has a lovely melody to it. A bit sad/melancholy:

A young gentleman came riding past
On a snow blue winter's day
He asked to drink, by our fire,
And I was pleased to let him stay
He drank there quietly for a while,
Then he turned and said to me:

Your eyes are green, like summer grass,
Your lips are red like a fresh cut rose,
Your hair is soft like an Irish stream
And your voice is filled with sweet beauty
And the last words I heard him say
Were "I shall return, for you, my love, on Christmas Day"

The night will come but I won't sleep,
As I watch the stars that lead him,
I cannot place where he is,
But still my heart goes with him,
I'm savin all my Sunday clothes
For the day that I'll be leavin

Father knows, my sister knows,
And my friends, they're happy for me
And the priest he says, you should thank God,
For the blessing of such beauty,

And the last words I heard him say
Were "I shall return for you, my love, on Christmas Day"
I shall return for you, my love, on Christmas Day.
And the last words I heard him say
Were the last words I ever heard him say
I shall return for you, my love, on Christmas Day
I swear, I will return on Christmas day,
And yes, I shall return on Christmas day
I shall return, for you, on Christmas day,
My love I will return on Christmas day,
I shall return, my love on Christmas day
On Christmas day...

on the rock-metaphore side:
Foreigner: Cold as Ice
Pink Floyd: Terminal Frost

on the seasonal side:
Anuna: Winter Fire and Snow
The Who: Christmas (from Tommy)

that's all that's coming to mind right now, but i'm burned out for some reason...

And now I have his version of Silver Bells running through my head.

Let it snow, let it snow, let it snow

Simon and Garfunkle's "Old Friends" seems like a winter song to me, but maybe it's set in the fall. I wouldn't call it a *favorite* song, but it is evocative.

"On a Winter's Night" (album of folk artists) has several good songs on it, including the title track.

Man-and-guitar setting of The Cremation of Sam McGee, I can dig out the CD to cite the artist if needed

probably inappropriate but Simon & Garfunkel's "Silent Night / Seven O'Clock News" is excellent too.

And I'm sure I could think of more if I had time just now.

Well, of course there is The Jethro Tull Christmas Album (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=newvinland&creative=9325&path=ASIN/B0002ZMJ5M/qid=1116867152/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1)Image ... which isn't quite as oriented towards the newer Christmas holiday so much as those from which the traditions were stolen. (For that matter, Songs From the Wood (http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/redirect?link_code=ur2&camp=1789&tag=newvinland&creative=9325&path=ASIN/B00008G9JN/qid=1116868041/sr=2-1/ref=pd_bbs_b_2_1)Image would also be good, although the main two songs that come to mind - Ring Out Solstice Bells and Fire at Midnight are also on the Christmas Album.

The Sidewalk Reels by Brian McNeil on his album The Busker and the Devil's Only Daughter though admittedly, this is probably for personal reasons and probably really mean "Winter" to most people who hear it.

Also I can't help but think of all the seasons as I listed to Mike Cross sing Wake Up My Love (found on The Bounty Hunter), although since it's not specific to Winter, that might not work for your purposes.

Finally, I feel I would be remiss if I didn't at least mention Steel Eye Span, but I honestly can't think of anything of theirs that says "Winter" to me. Perhaps someone else can point to an appropriate tune?

Ok, I actually like Sleighride and Winter Wonderland, but those are probably too cutesy for you. Hmm.. James Taylor's Frozen Man. Baby It's Cold Outside. I know I know others, I'll have to go look at CDs. Those are just the ones immediately springing to mind at the moment.

"Cold" by Annie Lennox off the Diva album...I second "Frozen" and "Baby It's Cold Outside" and "Icicle". There's a great Irving Berlin song in the movie "White Christmas" that I think is just called "Snow". If I think of more I will post again...

oh my yes. "Baby It's Cold Outside" - I have at least 3 or 4 different versions of that one. Excellent song.

Wake Skadi by Haglaz Runedance... from the Volven CD

In the winter mountains high,
Where avalanches roar and frozen lakes sigh
The sough of the wind to hear
The howl of the wolves sweet tune to her ear
Wake Skadi, come patroness
Guide me through your crystal woods

Silvery goddess of the snow,
Your shining beauty melts the cold
Dress me in your white shawl
Kindle my fierce passions
Wake Skadi, proud northern giantess
I invoke your strength

Mistress of the hunt,
Raise the spirit of freedom
Led your sisters into the chase,
Arouse their untamed nature
Wake Skadi; light the flames of courage,
Wake your sisters' will to fight

Sister of wolves,
Seek your companions
You heard the call of the wild
I summon your instinct
Wake Skadi, defend your kind
Guard them from the hateful hand of the blind

Not a CD you can walk into the store and buy though..... I do.. however.. own it... and will be at FSG.. LOL
