Da-yum! When I was in London in 1985 the system was cool and thorough... now it looks like it's simply massive. I'm suprised that anyone still drives there...

You probably don't really want the London system as is, as that was the first system from whose mistakes everyone else learned. The mistakes include having only one tunnel going in each direction (meaning that the system must be shut down for maintenance overnight, unlike, say, New York's) and making the tunnels too small (thus making air conditioning very difficult, and making the entire system rather uncomfortable in warm weather; they actually have signs telling people to bring bottles of water). Not to mention the chronic maintenance problems, delays and cancellations, which come from a combination of the non-futureproof design of the system and the British disease of cost-cutting.

Though people don't drive much in central London, especially with the congestion charge (i.e., tolls on all cars crossing a perimeter during working hours).

Must agree here! Whenever I've had to ride during rush hour it's 10X worse than WMATA at rush. The Brits don't seem to have any problem squishing 30 more people into a car. It doesn't matter if you are smashed into each other. I guess Americans have a tad more sense of space. I've not thankfully been that squished on WMATA, yet.
