Thursday:
Flew Independence Air to Chicago. Flight was delayed and a little turbulent, but we made it there eventually and my Father was there to pick us up. Deep sleep.
Friday:
Slept in. Showed Sam around my old hometown of Oak Park. Took the tour of Frank Lloyd Wright's home and studio - which I highly recommend if you're at all interested in architecture - and oogled at pretty houses. Had real gyros, not the crap that DC restaurants call gyros. Had yummy Italian ice - yay for deserts that Sam can eat. For dinner we went to Salerno's which has the best pizza in the world, mmmmm, pizza. Afterwords went out to Too Much Light Makes the Baby Go Blind. This was one of my favorite things to go to when I lived there - it's what I did instead of Rocky Horror. It's still awesome. Sam described it as Discordian porn, which seems as good a description as any. Sam also liked that we had to take Lower Wacker Drive to get there. Went home via the Magnificent Mile and a brief stop to ogle at the Tribune building.
Saturday:
Slept in. Played games (Odins Ravens, Battle Cry, Attika). Went downtown to Taste of Chicago (via Daley Plaza so Sam could have another Blues Brothers moment). Sam had ribs and chili. I had Thai food and cheesecake. We also had some yummy chocolate caramel thingies. Afterwords we stayed downtown to see the fireworks, some friends from H.S. saved us a prime viewing location. The fireworks were quite spetacular and there was much oo-ing and ah-ing.
Sunday:
Slept in. Played more games (Magic the Gathering (what a relief I cured myself of that addiction), finally introducing Sam to Settlers of Catan). Went back down to Taste. I had some toasted ravioli and more pizza. Sam had catfish nuggets and more ribs. Listened to They Might Be Giants (yay for free concerts). Afterwords went up to the Clark & Belmont area (aka freak central) to hook up with a different group of H.S. friends and watch a double feature of Kill Bill 2 and HellBoy at the brew and view.
Monday:
Slept in. Played even more games (more Battle Cry, Ra, Ninjaburger). My Father's wife made us a delicious dinner of Thai-style catfish. Then off to the airport to head home. Flight was delayed again, but eventually we made it and I got a couple of hours of sleep before needing to get up for work.
Overall we had an excellent time. Reminded myself what a cool city Chicago is, I miss it. Now back to work.
