Hawaii report - Day 0

So the advantage to being sick is that I had time to upload pictures and even annotate a map for you.

What I'm calling Day 0 was spent on the airplane. A very long BWI-LAS-OAK-KON flight, no big problems, got a nice view of the Grand Canyon flying into Las Vegas. LAS-OAK leg was delayed, but we had a long layover anyway so still arrived in plenty of time for the flight to Kona. In Kona, hey it's warm, find rental car place - rental car places computers are down, so they take a long time in getting me a car, but they do get me one (a Jeep Wrangler, which treated us very well). Drive into downtown Kona, find the hotel, crash.

Yay, maps! I'm making a map (following your lead) of my recent UK trip. Is there a functionality to chart a rail journey? I see the rail lines marked on the map. Do you know if there's any way to get Google to plot a course along there?

I didn't see anything letting you connect like that, I think you'd have to draw your line in tracing the rail line - if you don't care about it following the actual rails it will draw straight point to point lines which might be easier.

I'm cool with tracing the rail line, my hand is pretty steady (past life in graphics), but will the line stay along the rail line?

How does the tracing work?

You still have all the usual Google maps viewing options while drawing lines or polygons, so it would just be a visual thing, and it isn't really tracing, it's drawing point to point lines, just put your points along the rail line - once added the line will stay in the same geographic spot even if you pan or zoom - and you don't have to be all that exact as you can adjust or add in individual line vertices even after it's drawn.
