Games Days report
9 May 2011 22:30Games played: 7 Wonders, Ancients, Ascension, Black Friday, Dominion (including Cornucopia), London, Shipyard, Small World, Thunderstone, and Ticket to Ride.
A bunch of new games for me Ascension and Thunderstone both borrow the deck construction mechanism of Dominion. Both were fun, but I don't think they'll be replacing Dominion for me - Ascension especially felt a lot more random as your choices of what cards to buy are pretty limited so you don't have a whole lot of control over your deck. Black Friday is a stock manipulation game, ok but a little dry. London is a resource management/building type game - has an interesting mechanic in that most actions both help (give resources) and hurt (give poverty/negative points) and there is tension trying to manage that. Did seem to have quite a bit of down time between turns though. Shipyard is another resource management game, uses lots of rondels as a mechanic for distributing the various resources, of which there are many - players are trying to build ships and have hidden goals that give bonus points for certain types of ships - and those bonuses seemed to be what would decide the game, so it's hard to know who's winning. Probably a bit too crunchy for my usual gaming group. Only purchases were the new Dominion expansion and Blackbeard, off the silent auction, because I'm a sucker for pirate games.
