This site has a large series of historical maps of Washington, DC from 1791 to the present on which you can overlay modern geographic information - neat stuff - also has nicer imagery of the area than Google Maps does. Warning that the site is kind of slow and doesn't work with Firefox - not recommended without broadband.
Similar map series for Boston and San Francisco are on the same site.
