If you're at all interested in ruined castles, Chepstow Castle is a very worthwhile short side-trip from Tintern Abbey. It's the oldest surviving stone castle in Britain (construction started in 1067). As an added bonus, it's got some vey nice reconstructions of medieval siege weapons.
